What To Expect When You Visit The West Side Church of Christ

Many people are hesitant to attend worship services at an unfamiliar church. To help alleviate any apprehensions you may have regarding this congregation, we would like to explain what you can expect when you visit with us at West Side. --Courtesy And Kindness First of all, everyone is greeted with equal courtesy and kindness (Acts 10:34-35; Galatians 3:28). You will find no entertainment with beautiful organ or piano music. Like the first century Christians, we will engage in the singing of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19). The words used in our songs will be easy to understand (1 Corinthians 14:15). God has commanded the sincere praise of His people to come from the heart (Colossians 3:16). --Order And Reverence You will not be confused by many people speaking or praying at the same time. Good order will prevail at every service (1 Corinthians 14:33). You will observe one of the brethren leading the congregation reverently and quietly in prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-5). If you are present on Sunday, the Lord's Day, you will observe the congregation eating bread and drinking the fruit of the vine in memory of the death of Christ (Matthew 26:26-29). We do this on the first day of every week, like the Christians in the first century (Acts 20:7). You will not find special collections taken at every service. A collection is taken only on the Lord's Day (1 Corinthians 16:1-3). This congregation is supported by the free will offerings of its members. We do not ask non-members to financially support our work, nor do we engage in fund raising activities like rummage sales and bingo games. We specialize in being a church, and do not compete with places of amusement. --The Bible Is Our Only Guide You will observe that the Bible is the textbook to which reference is repeatedly made in our classes and sermons. Special emphasis is placed on that part of the Bible known as the New Testament (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Romans 1:16). You will never be asked to accept what some man says about the Bible; we want you to read the Bible for yourself to see "whether those things are so" (Acts 17:11). The audience will not be embarrassed or singled out for any sort of demonstration or testimony. You can quietly observe and study that which you see and hear (1 Corinthians 14:40). --Salvation In Christ You will hear obedience to the will of Christ emphasized as necessary to salvation: faith in Christ as taught in the gospel (Romans 10:17); repentance (Luke 24:47); confession of faith in Christ (Romans 10:9-10); and baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38). If there should be a response from someone in the audience to the appeal mentioned above, you will see them taken to a pool of water where, in simple likeness to the burial of Christ, they will be buried in water and raised to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:3-4). --Expect A Serving Church The members of the West Side Church of Christ see themselves as God's servants. God has blessed us so that we might be a blessing to others. Much of our fellowship and activity together is focused on equipping ourselves to serve others. We want to follow the apostle Paul's example of sharing not only the Gospel of Christ, but our lives as well (I Thess. 2:8). --Expect A Teaching Church We believe the Gospel of Christ was made to be shared. Personal study of the Bible is offered to you through many means. For Example: · Free Bible Correspondence Course: Many people enjoy studying the Bible in the privacy of their own home, at their own convenience. Our correspondence courses are designed with these people in mind. Your enrollment in one of these studies will be welcomed. · Free Home Bible Study: Qualified men and women of the congregation are willing and eager to study the Bible with you, in person, in the comfort of your home. You may simply want to ask questions that have been on your mind for a long time, or you may want our family member to take the lead in studying the basic principles of Biblical Christianity with you. Just call, anytime, and an appointment can be made. · Bible Tracts: An excellent list of bible tracts on all topics of interest. If you just have a Bible question in which you would like a Bible answer, we invite you to submit your question to us. We will do all we can to provide a complete answer from God's word for you. You will be more than welcome at all of our services. Please come and bring your Bible to "search the Scriptures" with us. If you do not have a Bible, we will be happy to give you one. Contact Our Office At The Number or E-mail Below To Request Any Of The Above Please state what you are interested in and include your name, address and phone number in your e-mail to us! --Expect A Learning Church We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is our only trustworthy guide for life, and for all that we believe and practice as a church. For this reason, studying the Bible together is a high priority for the West Side family. You are welcome to attend any of our Bible classes, including our Sunday morning class at 9:30 a.m., and our Wednesday evening class at 7:00 p.m. We have excellent classes at these times for all ages, children and adult. --Expect a Worshipping Church The family at West Side assembles to worship together each Sunday morning and again each Sunday evening. (Please see the schedule of services below for times). God is praised as we sing, pray, give, commune together, and as the Word of God is preached to everyone. The people in our assembly are built up and encouraged. You will find in this assembly a fellowship and "family-feeling" that reflects the love we have for one another. -- Expect A Bible-Centered Church The Bible is our only guide for our belief and practice. We want to be Christians only, and we diligently strive to reproduce the church of the first century in its faith, teaching, practice, and in its warm fellowship. A Final Word-- You are cordially invited to visit any Bible Class or assembly conducted by the West Side Church of Christ. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you. A schedule of services follows, along with a map of our location. How To Contact Us: By Phone -- (540) 389-9139 office@westsidecofc-salem.com

Mission Support
Memphis School of Preaching A few years before the beloved N. B. Hardeman was taken home by the Lord he made this statement, "If I could start over I would have a school in which only the Bible would be taught." He could see the need for greater emphasis on Bible teaching. He was in no wise opposed to secular education, but his main interest was in the purity of the church and the propagation of sound doctrine. His statement would not exclude such related courses as would be beneficial to the preacher, such as Bible Geography, Church History, etc., but he recognized the growing interest in the secular and the decreasing interest in the sacred and divine. No man in this century has done more to promote the restoration of primitive Christianity than did Brother Hardeman through his influence at Freed-Hardeman College. With this idea from Brother Hardeman in mind, and having observed the beginning of such effort, it was decided to launch such a school east of the Mississippi river. Trips were made to several cities and the proposition laid before elderships. After two years of effort it was arranged to begin the school in Memphis, Tennessee. This was because of the fact that considerable interest in such a school was generated in Memphis, and the location seemed ideal to serve the eastern part of the nation, since no other school of this kind existed then east of the Mississippi. The school was launched in September 1966, with fifteen men enrolled from seven states. Since then the school has enjoyed substantial growth and considerable success can be claimed for the graduates who are now in the field. The elders of the Forest Hill Church of Christ, along with those who serve as faculty of the school, strongly adhere to the principles of the Restoration Movement. They believe the Bible to be the verbally inspired word of God, perfect, sufficient, and fully authoritative, and that it is just as applicable today as when given by the Holy Spirit through inspired men, and that it shall always be able to supply every need of man morally, spiritually, socially, and even in the realm of economics. It is the desire and intent of this school to send forth men who love the Lord into the fields of labor, and who will always be set for the defense and proclamation of the gospel of Christ. Effort will always be made to conduct this school in a manner worthy of the confidence and support of those who love the truth. The Memphis School of Preaching is located in the metropolitan area of Memphis, Tennessee. The Memphis School of Preaching exists for the purpose of training men to be ministers of the gospel, offering such courses in Bible and related subjects as necessary to that end. It is proposed to give such assistance as needed to men who for various reasons are unable to attend a regular college, or who have degrees and do not find it practical or expedient to do so. This school shall strive for the highest quality possible in teacher, student, and courses of study. This school shall also be open to others than preachers, who desire to better themselves in the Lord's services, and who will comply with all requirements of the school. Website: www.msop.org The West Side congregation is currently sponsoring: Jonathan Beavers "We'll Take A Dozen" - Preacher student support, Arusha, Tanzania. This is the West Side congregation commitment to support 12 preaching students at the Andrew Connally School of Preaching in Tanzania for their 24-month course of study. Our commitment to these students began in July of 2003. "Gimme $5 for Tanzania" The Gimme Five Program begun in 2001, originally with seven couples from the Marriage Enrichment Class. Thinking they would each contribute $5 per month to the work in Tanzania, the intent was to support one preacher student in the Andrew Connally School of Preaching $35 each month and continue to do so for several years. With the approval of the eldership, the entire congreagtion was later encouraged to contribute, and since that time the amount has grown to some $450 contributed each month. The Gimme FIVE program now supports preacher students, missionaries from America, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as paying rent so village churches have a place to meet each Lord's day. It also contributes monthly to the Cy Stafford Family's Work Fund in Tanzania. The mission of Potter Children's Home and Family Ministries is to be a tool in the hands of supporting churches of Christ and individual Christians to deliver God's justice and mercy to children and families in need. www.potterministries.org  House to House/ Heart to Heart The Jacksonville Alabama church began an extensive mission work in 1995 publishing House to House/Heart to Heart (HTH). Circulation for 1999 is estimated to be 1,000,000 copies by over 100 churches of Christ in 17 different states. The paper is arranged so that only the front and back pages need changing. West Side writes the "Thoughts from the Heart" column, our leaders names and our meeting times are placed on the front page. We can also include any information we need published (e.g. Radio/TV programs, Gospel Meeting, VBS). The West Side church began distributing HTH in 1997. We have found this to be an exciting opportunity to reach out to those who are not members of the Lord's church. Jesus commanded us to "Go..." (Mark 16:15), and we believe that includes houses across the street as well as those across the oceans. We at West Side feel strongly on reaching our own neighborhood. Our goal is to reach each family in our community with the Gospel. We have distributed some estimated 180,000 copies of HTH to the Salem area. We know that all are not "good soil," but there has to be a percentage who are honestly seeking to learn the Truth and please the Father. We want to have positive contact with them as often as possible and HTH will provide the necessary vehicle for helping to accomplish this goal. Readers of HTH are exposed to a wide range of Bible topics and articles --- from the existence of God to the creation of the world; dangers of false doctrine, the restoration movement, God's love, and the necessity of church attendance. Included in HTH is the "HOW MAY WE HELP YOU?" section which is a clip and mail section that can be completed and returned to use. We offer enrollment in the "Survey of the Bible" Study Course, the "Visualized Bible Study" video series, requests for daily Bible reading schedule and our weekly bulletin, and requests from those who want to know what God requires for them to be saved. There is also a "FEATURED TRACTS" section that is a service to our readers. They simply check the Bible subjects of interest and we send them the requested tracts. The annual publishing schedule for HTH: House to House/Heart to Heart - taught you publicly, and from house to house Acts 20:20  CD Ministry The West Side Church of Christ provides CD's to interested people of all services, plus Gospel Meetings and Special Speakers. The Church duplicates, hand delivers or mails these at no charge. Tom Richardson is handling this for the congregation. Ukraine Preacher Training Joshua Ankiah, South Africa
